About the Austin Convention Center Expansion and Redevelopment

Artist

Art can inspire, energize and induce a positive emotional response. For this reason, we are committed to featuring more visual art into the total experience of our customers, visitors and attendees. In keeping with the City of Austin’s Art in Public Places Program (AIPP), several iconic pieces were commissioned as part of the capital improvement budget for the original construction of the Austin Convention Center and subsequent additions. In addition to the public art collection, the Austin Convention Center Department began acquiring additional works by some of the region’s most accomplished artists, which can be found in various spots throughout the facility. Keep your eyes peeled for any of these exceptional works during your next visit!

Joel Salcido

Joel Salcido is always in quest of new visual frontiers, whether they be out in the highlands of any earthly corner of the planet or the mere comforts of a studio.

Salcido enjoys people a lot, especially their tales of conquest and defeat.

Once, at the top of a meseta in northern Spain, he witnessed an 82-year-old shepherd convince two enraged men that their fight was not worthy of true gentlemen. “Ole” to that!

Capturing life at its best has won him a few awards along the way, however he is most happy that some of these images have made their way into the vaults of art museums across the grand state of Texas.

When not in the States, you’ll likely find him chasing those brave bulls of Spain, or trekking his way to the best tequila Mexico has to offer.
